Primary Education in India

Primary Education in India

In India, elementary schools provide education from Class 1 to Class 8. The children in these classes are generally aged between 6 and 15 years. It is the next stage after kindergarten (Pre-Nursery, Nursery, Prep or Lower Kindergarten and Upper Kindergarten). The next stage after primary education is Middle School (Class 7th to 10th). In most schools in North India, children in Classes 1st to 3rd are taught English, Hindi, Mathematics, Environmental Science, and General Knowledge. In class 4th and 5th the environmental science subject is replaced by General Science and Social Studies. However some schools may introduce this concept in Class 3 itself. Some schools may also introduce a third language in Class 5th or even in Class 4th. Sanskrit and local state language are the most common third languages taught in Indian schools. At some places, primary education is labeled as the education of Class 3rd to Class 5th and up to class 2nd as pre-primary education. This is because many new concepts are introduced in this class. Children are taught painting instead of drawing and colouring, exams are taken, and Word Sum Puzzle in maths are introduced along with geometry.

IITs to open its doors to non-resident students soon

With an aim to increase their total intake to one lakh by 2020, IITs have decided to raise the number of seats in various courses for admitting "non-resident students". There would be an increase of 4,000 seats in undergraduate courses and 6,000 seats in postgraduate and Ph.D course.

Eyeing to increase their total intake to one lakh by 2020, IITs have decided to raise the number of seats in various courses for admitting "non-resident students".
In a meeting of the IIT Council, chaired by HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, "in-principle" approval was given to the proposal for admitting non-resident students, according to senior officials. The authorities of different IITs will now fix the number of additional students they can accommodate.
About the new plan:
"At present, the IITs have around 72,000 students in their undergraduate, postgraduate or doctorate courses which are residential. However, it is now planned that students, who will not stay in hostels, should be admitted to these institutes," an official said.
The plan is to raise the number by 10,000 per year so that the number of IITians touches 1 lakh by 2020, the official said.  There would be an increase of 4,000 seats in undergraduate courses and 6,000 seats in postgraduate and Ph.D course to accommodate these students, an official said

Prime Minister's research fellowships:
IIT Council has also approved a proposal to introduce the Prime Minister's Research Fellowships, announced Javadekar. The move aims to encourage IITians passing out of BTech to enroll in PhD courses straightaway. The council has also decided to introduce an introduction course to help new students adjust as they join these institutes after a rigorous competitive examination.
The IIT Council has also given its approval to a "pilot" run of an aptitude test, the officials said, adding that the modalities will be worked out. They said that this test would not have a bearing on admissions.
Scheme to help IITs secure top ranks:
The council also approved the scheme 'Vishwajeet' that will help IITs to secure top ranks globally.
The government has received inputs from various quarters on the draft of new education policy and a workshop would soon be organised in this regard, said Javadekar. He said education is a subject beyond politics and the government is willing to listen to all views on the issue.

About UPSC:
The Union Public Service Commission (PSC), is an organisation that works under the government of India to recruit staff for various posts in various ministries and departments, and in subordinate offices. The commission also conducts examinations for the recruitment in various administrative positions of the country.

About News
Union Public Service Commission is soon going to revise the upper age limit for the prestigious Civil Services Examination (CSE). The commission may reduce the upper age limit to 26, as per ET.
At present, the candidates between the age group of 21 and 32 years are eligible to appear for the examinations.
The commission is thinking to reduce the upper age limit by 6 years to insulate the aspirants currently preparing for the exam. However, there would be no reduction in the upper age limit for the SC/ ST category candidates which is presently 37 years.
Last year in August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed a panel to revamp the entire system of the civil services examination. The panel is chaired by former education secretary BS Baswan.
The Central Government will take a final decision on this matter.
Every year, UPSC conducts the examination to fill administrative positions in different All-India Services exams including IAS, IFS, IPS.

 India Education Profile

India Education Profile

India, with more than a billion residents, has the second largest education system in the world (after China). Experts estimate that 32 percent of its current population is under the age of 15.1 But counter to the image of India as a youthful engine of economic growth where many urban-based citizens work in some of the best technology-centered jobs in the world, males in India complete just 2.9 years of schooling on average, females just 1.8 years.2 And for the small proportion who do persist through primary and secondary schooling, the quality of instruction varies widely, depending on the region of the country and whether one is enrolled in a State-supported public school or a fee-based private school. Despite the highly inefficient delivery of public services, high levels of teacher absenteeism and non-teaching activity, many Indian students remain motivated to succeed on the college entrance exams. The high level of competition for entry into the Indian Institutes of Technology, the Indian Institutes of Management and other top institutions is enough to spur millions of students to achieve at remarkably high levels, particularly in the areas of science and mathematics. The increased demand for higher education is not currently being met: only ten percent of the age cohort is actually enrolled in higher education. But in a country with such a large population, ten percent enrollment amounts to 9 million students, resulting in 2.5 million new college graduates a year. These numbers driven by the private sector opportunities abroad, and increasingly, back in India, will continue to ensure India’s prowess in delivering high-quality technical manpower.

Historically, Indian education has been elitist. Traditional Hindu education was tailored to the needs of Brahmin boys who were taught to read and write by a Brahmin teacher. Under British rule from the 1700s until 1947, India’s education policies reinforced the pre-existing elitist tendencies, tying entrance and advancement in government service to academic education. Colonial rule contributed to the legacy of an education system geared to preserving the position of the more privileged classes. Education served as a "gatekeeper," permitting an avenue of upward mobility only to those with resources.
Self study Or Coaching classes

Self study Or Coaching classes

One of the big questions for students is to decide whether to go for self study or for coaching Institutes. Through this write up We have tried to analyse certain untouched aspects of self study and very hopeful that this article would be able to provide certain guiding principles/suggestions to the student community. Personally I feel that Self study is a very good option for every student because without self study it is very difficult to clear any examination. But The main reason behind this thinking is coaching also involves a remarkable amount of self study. Later on in this write up we’ll discuss this point. Another reason to go for self study is the confidence factor involved in it. Successful self study may give you an incredible amount of confidence to deal with any kind of subject or course. Further we have to understand one more thing quite clearly that self study or coaching classes are not the sole deciding factor as far as success in professional examination is concerned. You may find various examples around you. There are many students who have cleared their exams quite easily just by doing self study and some of the students who have taken coaching are still struggling or vice versa. So the main decisive factor is your honest efforts and commitment towards your preparation and nothing else. Let us discuss certain pre-conditions for self study entirely based on my personal observation.

How to be an Effective Coach

You've probably heard people talking about coaching in the workplace. You might have even received some coaching in the past, or you might have used coaching to improve a person's performance, even if you didn't actually describe it as "coaching" at the time.
But what actually is coaching, and how do you use it? And what skills do you need to be an effective coach?
In this article, we'll look at the basics of coaching in the workplace. We'll clarify what it involves, and review the key approaches that you can use to be a successful coach. We'll also review some situations where coaching can be useful, and look at some examples of coaching questions.

About Coaching

Coaching is a useful way of developing people's skills and abilities, and of boosting performance. It can also help deal with issues and challenges before they become major problems.
A coaching session will typically take place as a conversation between the coach and the coachee (person being coached), and it focuses on helping the coachee discover answers for themselves. After all, people are much more likely to engage with solutions that they have come up with themselves, rather than those that are forced upon them!
In some organizations, coaching is still seen as a corrective tool, used only when things have gone wrong. But in many companies, coaching is considered to be a positive and proven approach for helping others explore their goals and ambitions, and then achieve them.
Coaches in the workplace are not counselors, psychotherapists, gurus, teachers, trainers, or consultants – although they may use some of the same skills and tools.
Most formal, professional coaching is carried out by qualified people who work with clients to improve their effectiveness and performance, and help them achieve their full potential. Coaches can be hired by coachees, or by their organizations. Coaching on this basis works best when everyone clearly understands the reason for hiring a coach, and when they jointly set the expectations for what they want to achieve through coaching.
However, managers and leaders in the organization can be just as effective as externally hired coaches. Managers don't have to be trained formally as coaches. As long as they stay within the scope of their skill set, and maintain a structured approach, they can add value, and help develop their people's skills and abilities.

Note 1:

The key challenge for managers is to separate their management role from their coaching role. Our article Informal Coaching for Managers  includes ideas and best practices on how best to do this.

Note 2:

Although coaching in the workplace is just as important as coaching in sport, the approach is different. Sports coaches mentor their athletes, using technical skills, experience, and a "telling" style of direction. By contrast, questioning and reflection are often more important in workplace coaching.

Where Coaching Can Help

Here are a few examples of questions that you can answer with the benefit of coaching:
  • How can I manage my time better to achieve all I want in life?
  • What should I do next in my career within the organization?
  • How can I reduce the stress in my job or my life?
  • How can I achieve a better balance between work life and home life?
  • What skills do I need to grow and develop further?
  • How can I improve my relationship with a specific colleague?
